Dry Needling

Is the insertion of a thin stainless steel needle to stimulate the muscle to create positive change. These changes can reduce muscle spasm, release muscular tension therefore improving range of motion from restriction.

Trigger Points are known for local and referred pain sights within muscle, tenderness and restriction that can lead to compensatory movement patterns.

The definition of a trigger point: “a hyper-irritable spot, usually within a taut band of skeletal muscle or in the muscle’s fascia. The spot is painful on compression and can give rise to characteristic referred pain, tenderness and autonomic behaviour.” - Travell and Simons 1992.

Ash Dry Cupping on Functional Myotherapy

Cupping

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, cupping is used to improve the flow of QI = “physical life force”.

Cupping offers many benefits to the body; the vacuum sensation of the cups offers myofascial release, promotes blood flow and the opening of energy channels.

You may have heard the term “bruise” in relation to cupping, attached is an article to explain this misunderstanding.

BE activated 123

The Be Activated 123 approach is the assessment of movement and how we can improve our movement pattern. The body is segmented into 3 zones hence the name 1-2-3.

  1. Zone 1 is the diaphragm psoas/glute.
  2. Zone 2 is the quadriceps/hamstring and abdominal/torso.
  3. Zone 3 is the lower leg/foot and shoulder/head.

The optimal movement pattern is a 1-2-3 sequence activating from zone 1 which flows into zone 2 and zone 3. Envision a wave as it continues to roll it gathers momentum to become a powerful force. Now imagine the body midpoint (zone 1) driving a foundation that integrates control, flexibility and strength.

Matwork Pilates

“Pilates develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit” - Joseph Pilates.

I undertook my matwork pilates training at Studio Pilates to enhance my exercise prescription skillset, rather than to be an instructor. The principles of pilates are concentration, centring, breathing, control, precision, flowing movement and isolation.

One of the many great attributes of pilates is that there is an exercise for everyone beginning at a basic level to the gradual increase in difficulty and intensity plus the integration of coordinated movements.
